A double CD with extensive liner notes, Volume 1 presents the great power of the rituals of the Drupka and Nyingmapa orders, recorded in the early seventies by British ethnomusicologist John Levy...

Invited by the King of Bhutan, Levy was afforded every facility for recording monastic music in the principal fort-like Dzongs (monasteries) of the Nyingmapa Order. The ethereal Polytonal throat chanting, the long trumpets, shawms and percussion instruments, the processional music and spectacular mask dances, Tibetan and Bhutanese secular songs and poems. All captured by Levy, in stereo, using a Nagra portable recorder and reproduced with incredibly sonic fidelity.

Disc 1 details the rituals of the Drukpa order from Thimphu and Punakha, and the sacred dances and rituals of the Nyingmapa and Drukpa orders from Nyimalung and Tongsa. Disc 2 covers more sacred dances and rituals as well as public ceremonies.

In these rituals the primary instrumentation is provided by the long golden trumpet, the dung chen, along with various drums and percussion and a deep droning bass. Chanted and played by 76 Lamas and monks with dung chen, shawms, cymbals, drums and other Tibetan instruments in sacred temples, rather than soothingly meditative, the music can be a perceived as a little dissonant to Western ears.

A truly remarkable collection, with extensive liner notes, photographs, and musical illustrations by John Levy.
