"The Book of Scenes is a work for Viola and Piano written for Jean-Phillipe Collard-Neven and Vincent Royer. Composed between 2003 and 2005 this recorded version of the work contains 29 sections of short 'scenes' of relationships between the two musicians and instruments and the surrounding environment of the space they inhabit. Each piece is composed as a type of short sound film with the sounds, references, methods of construction, improvisations, instruments and musicians exchanging roles and in relationship with one another. The players appear live, as samples playing with copies of themselves and in some as the material of memory, where the material of one scene is rearranged and transformed into the creation of another. The scenes can be arranged in any order, the sequence here being chosen by the musicians and the composer but listening on random shuffle or creating your own order is also recommended." David Shea
