NOT APPLICABLE launch party 04/04/08

On Friday 4th April Not Applicable will be celebrating the release of two new records with performances by both groups upstairs at the Betsey Trotwood in Farringdon London.

Not Applicable Album Launch concert with Arthurs.Høiby.Ritchie and Lothar Ohlmeier / Isambard Khroustaliov, with lighting by Martin Hampton: Upstairs @ The Betsey Trotwood, 56 Farringdon Road, London, EC1R 3BL. Nearest tube: Farringdon. Cover charge: £5 (£4 concessions).

Lothar Ohlmeier / Isambard Khroustaliov - Nowhere

One of the most insightful and thought provoking electro-acousic duos to have appeared over the last few years, their debut release is the culmination of 3 years spent exploring the realms of improvised music and live electronics.

"The level of symbiosis between the two musicians is such that the boundaries of their respective interactions is at times blurred, but even when the roles are clearly defined, the work remains dense, coherent, and of very high standard, making this record an unmissable experience. Album of the month." The Milk Factory

"On the opening Haze, the bass clarinet is completely hidden, to begin, obscured by sonic transformation, frosted twists and clinging gauze-tones, with reed-matter gradually peeking through as the piece progresses. It’s a slow motion growth, with clicks and breath-wheezes magnified for a massive sound-stage. This music is always aurally compelling, but also has bonus aspects within the realms of tactile sensation and visual fantasy." BBC

"Excellent, like discovering new life in the back garden." Plan B Magazine

Arthurs.Høiby.Ritchie - Explications

This exciting trio features three of the UK’s most sought after musicians, Tom Arthurs, Jasper Høiby and Stuart Ritchie. All have their own separate projects but came together as Arthurs.Høiby.Ritchie in 2005. Their debut album, explications is simply one stage of what promises to be an exhilarating and ongoing journey for this fearsome trio.

"If there was ever any question that trumpeter Tom Arthurs was a world-class talent, then Explications leaves us in no doubt" Jazzwise

"tough discipline handled with verve and intelligence, most exciting record of the season." Jazz Review

FOR BARRY RAY news

Hi Folks,

Apologies to non-London/UK folks, but wanted to give you an update from us. I've a broken wrist (yes, ouch!) so to make up for our own lack of playing, we're organising a show for our good friend Saya, vocalist and primary songwriter for Japan's Tenniscoats. It will be the first show at Dalston's latest live performance space Cafe Oto and is sure to be a memorable evening of inspired psychedelic avant-pop.

Saya (Tenniscoats)
Sunday, 13 April 2008

CAFE OTO
18 - 22 Ashwin street
Dalston, London, E8 3DL
£5
buy in advance from:

http://www.wegottickets.com/event/28621

ABOUT SAYA/TENNISCOATS:

Tenniscoats celebrate all that makes song vital in our collective consciousness, matching emotive live performance against delicately psychedelic folk songs. As Johan Berthling of Swedish trio Tape commented:

"Their starting point is pop songs, but with a staggeringly free approach: psychedelic folk tunes, complex instrumentals and short pop jewels side by side, everything is possible. A song can be performed in a myriad ways. Their interplay is angular and at the same time the most sensitive one has heard. A feeling of a music that constantly goes on, whether Saya and Ueno are on stage or not. A music free of pretensions, but urgent as few things I have heard."

Saya is one of the key figures in the Tokyo underground pop scene, a catalyst and collaborator, organising shows and giving opportunities to younger musicians on the scene, whilst spreading her own wings with far-flung collaborations.  Two are due later this year with The Pastels (on Geographic Domino) and Deerhoof's Satomi as OneOne - the name a sweet pun on the Japanese onomatopoeia for a dog's bark (i'm guessing!). These follow last year's two stunning records - Totemo Aimasho (trans. 'Lets meet very much' for the Australian ROOM40 label - both Carina & I played on this one and a good chunk of it was recorded at our place in London! Its Lovely!!!) and Tan-Tan Therapy (w/ Tape, for Häpna in Sweden).

Saya is also a member of Maher Shalal Hash Baz and runs the Majikick label with her partner Takashi Ueno (Tenniscoats' guitarist/saxophonist) from their base in Tokyo's outer suburbs.

ABOUT CAFE OTO:

Cafe OTO is a brand new venue based in Dalston, London presenting the most innovative artists working today with a particular focus on new music. The venue's aim is to support and foster a vibrant creative community rooted in their local surroundings whilst embracing the best new music and art from the U.K. and abroad.

Cafe OTO (meaning noise/sound/music in Japanese) comprises of one large café/performance space open during the day serving food and drink with an evening programme of live music, films, talks and discussions. Based on the ground floor of an old warehouse on Ashwin Street in Dalston.......

Hope you can make it and look forward to seeing you there!!!
All the best,

John.

NOT APPLICABLE: Appliances @ Scooterworks, London

APPLIANCES

Not Applicable hosts a monthly night; Appliances, on the first (or sometimes second) Thursday of every month at Scooterworks. Presenting new experiments in electronic and acoustic improvised music and inviting different guest performers each time. Scooterworks is an elegant secondhand moped dealer and cafe serving the finest coffee, cocktails and nibbles in the UK, for which you can thank Fifi.

Guests for Appliances #4 on March 6th 2008 are Matt Yee-King and Finn Peters. Matt is a really exciting electronic music producer and drummer who does awesome live interactive performance with Supercollider. You may have heard of him from his work on Rephlex. Finn is an equally excellent sax and flute player, and part of the F-IRE Collective. Its hoped that the third member of their trio, Tom Skinner, is available too, meaning you’ll hear the trio of Matt Yee-King, Finn Peters and Tom Skinner.

=====

Scooterworks uk
132 Lower Marsh, London, SE1 7AE
Tube: Waterloo, Lambeth North

Scooterworks is a cosy shop hidden just a walk away from Waterloo and Westminster Bridge. During the day they sell vintage Vespas and Vespa paraphernalia, and they serve arguably the most delicious espresso in town. On some evenings, in the knowledgeable hands of house mistress Fifi’s hands, it turns into a stylish lounge, where poetry reading, masterful cocktails, tapas and daring live music regularly attract a dainty selection of discerning Londoners.

On the Summer of 2006 some of the artists from the Not Applicable label joined forces with Fifi, and put together The Asymmetry of Three, an evening of electroacoustic improvised music that packed Scooterworks beyond expectation and left fond and long standing memories in everybody who was there.

Scanner Newsletter March 2008
Travel Bug

Hello

Back to health and the only bug I’m submitting to is the travel bug, with the last month taking me from Amsterdam to Paris, to Berlin and Freiburg, Torino to Stockholm and even Derby and Cambridge in the fair old Great Britain.

The Githead tour on our little Gitmobile across Europe was mighty fun, driving an average of 1000 km a day slipping between city and city, rock and rolling to the very receptive crowds. Surviving on too little sleep, poor motorway food and free wi-fi whenever possible, we bonded through adversity, perversity and absurdity. People danced in Paris, headbanged in Koln and wouldn’t let us leave the stage in Amsterdam, so we intend to make this a regular punishment over the year!

Over to Stockholm with Sukhdev Sandhu for a rather extraordinary performance of our Night Haunts project, where Färgfabriken hosted our presentation in almost total darkness. Home to a terrifying installation by artist John Duncan during the daytime, we sat at one end of a gigantic industrial warehouse, in total darkness but for the reflection from a dim light bulb and monitor screen in the far distance where we were placed. The audience had to maneuver their way, as if blind, through the space towards us, with only the sound of amplified dripping water to entice and guide them. The restlessness of the night provided the inspiration for the words and sounds that they then experienced.

This month I’ll be participating in SPNM’s experimental music night, The Sound Source, at London’s Luminaire on 12th March. It will be an unusual and creative response to the work of the late Karlheinz Stockhausen. Headlining the event are Belgian pianist Daan Vandewalle, who will perform Klavierstücke I-IV, and drummer and percussionist Chris Cutler, who will join him for a version of Kontakte. I will then complete the line-up premiering a new work, Retuning Stockhausen, where I’ll be performing live on guitar solo with electronics for the first time in my life in front of an audience. It’s one thing to play guitar with a band, hiding in the ranks, it’s quite another to stand there alone, vulnerable and afraid!. Rounding off the evening we will team up to perform a newly commissioned tribute to one of Stockhausen’s hidden gems, Stockhoven/Beethausen. Should be a fun night out for all!

A free London show for anyone can be shared at the Barbican Centre on 8th March as part of Late Night Do Something Different, with a late bar for any fair drinkers and music, short films, workshops and live performances. I’ll be on stage live at 23.20 (well past my bed-time), after writer Julian Fox, comedy and sonnets from Ken Campbell and Pippa Evans, and my personal favourite - glow in the dark knitting –how can one resist attending?

I am soon off to Amsterdam to present my work as part of a series of lectures around the subject of Amateurism. We are submerged in slick, beautiful, highly produced creative work - in fashion, design and the arts. But perhaps even more inspirational than this are examples of ordinary people's creativity, which abounds in pieces ranging from cafe menus to flea-market brick-a-brack to funny emails. In fact, amateurism’s naïve passion often makes it of greater interest than “professional” work. I’ll be sharing some amusing stories and minor words of wisdom on this subject at the Amsterdam Academy of Architecture.

Also over in The Netherlands I will be showing a new film work at MU Gallery in Eindhoven NL this month too for a group show, Popshop. The show looks at the icons of mass culture in pop music, with artists Kathy Temin, Iain Forsyth & Jane Pollard, Cory Arcangel, Ho Tzu Nyen presenting works that riff on ideas of popular music. I will be premiering Soul in Reverse, a new audio/video work that explores the image of Michael Jackson in popular culture, reversing his public image so that he begins as a white soul singer and ends up as a black artist.

The month concludes in Moscow running creative workshops for sound enthusiasts and radio producers from all over Russia, and hopefully cakes at the Kremlin for tea.

Yes, it’s exhausting just thinking about it all.

Until next month

Robin

Design Mind Unit
Sound Design Scanner
Artangel Interaction invited writer and historian Sukhdev Sandhu to write a nocturnal journal unfolding over the course of 2006. His postings will appear sequentially at this microsite specially designed by Mind Unit. Sandhu's forays see him prospecting in the London night with the people who drive its pulse, from the avian police to security guards, zookeepers and exorcists. Acclaimed artist and musician Scanner has collaborated with Sukhdev and Ian Budden of Mind Unit to compose the sound for the site.

Bittersweet Songs for the Sleepless City
Artangel Interaction

NightJam is the latest project in Artangel Interaction’s Nights of London series of artist-led collaborations with people who have a special view on a hidden side of the nocturnal city. Scanner invited young people at New Horizon Youth Centre in King’s Cross to collaborate on a creative project that expresses how the city at night looks and sounds to their ears and eyes. Through music and voice workshops they explored the sense of freedom and fear, celebration and solitude of the concealing darkness. Meanwhile, they captured their nights on disposable cameras, taking images that are at times eerie, startling, contemplative and funny. NightJam presents two elusive visual and musical journeys through the city’s ‘quiet’ hours.

NightJam presents two music tracks, a film, photographs, that can be experienced and freely downloaded. A limited edition CD is also being distributed for free through the website. Now featuring remixes of NightJam by Stephen Vitiello, Hakan Lidbo, Troy Banarzi, Si-cut.db and Pete Lockett.
