PSAPP: Live session and interview on NPR

Hello Peoples,

The World Cafe will be broadcasting a Psapp session and interview on Thursday, November 9, 2006 that we recorded whilst we were in the US on tour in the Summer.

We actually recorded the interview last week in a studio in London and we stole Lionel Richie's autograph while we were there!!

Some blurb about the show:

National Public Radio's World Cafe with host David Dye can be heard on nearly 200 stations nationwide. Fans can find their local station by going to the website.

...or you can listen online to the WXPN/Philadelphia stream Monday to Friday 2pm to 4pm Eastern Standard Time by going here.

Late in the day of broadcast, the audio will be available on the National Public Radio website.

Love from Mr and Mrs Psapp xxx

New WIRE releases

Wireat CBGB 1978

Wireat CBGB 1978

PIC WIRE live at CBGB in 1978

First up the vinyl re-releases of the 1st 3 albums - Pink Flag, Chairs Missng & 154. These remasters are on 180 gram vinyl, come in bags (with inner sleeves) that echo the mini - vinyls of the 1977-1979 box set and shout "collectable"! Posteverything is doing the 3 together for a special price...see here

Secondly the much awaited Live at The Roxy, London (1977)/ Live at CBGB Theatre, New York (1978) albums will be released as a double CD cunningly packaged to look like two seperate albums in one pack. this release is in response to pleas by all those that rushed out to buy the Pinkflag/EMI re-releases before they had heard about the box set. The timing of these releases, coming just after the sad closure of CBGB and just a few months ahead of the 30th anniversary of Wire's debut as a 4 piece at the Roxy, was not deliberate but provides a special context for these performaces to reach a wider public.

You might like to check in with Wire's MySpace "now with added real Wire". The page has proved remarkably popular adding 1000 friends a month since it has been under new directorship. There's a little surprise download there for those that are intersted...

RUNE GRAMMOFON Night @ The London Jazz Festival

In the year that saw it celebrate its 50th release it is fitting that Rune Grammofon should be returning to London with three of it’s acclaimed groups.

date:  Wednesday 15th November
doors:  tba
headline:  Supersilent
support: Susanna & The Magical Orchestra + In The Country
night:  Rune Grammofon at The London Jazz Festival
admission:  £12.50
venue:  Cargo, 83 Rivington Street, Kingsland Viaduct, Shoreditch, LONDON, EC2A 3AY
phone: 020 7739 3440
transport:  Old Street tube

Supersilent:

Arve Henriksen: trumpet, electronics
Helge Sten: audio virus
Ståle Storløkken: keyboards
Jarle Vespestad: drums

Supersilent 1-3, a triple album was a suitably ambitious first release for the fledgling Rune Grammofon label back in 1998.  About the music they play together they remain taciturn, even by the tight-lipped standards of the Far North. They don't rehearse, don't discuss the music, don't socialize together, meeting only to play concerts or to record. Supersilent music lives in the no-man's-land between the genres, somewhere between rock, electronic music, jazz, modern composition, musique concrète, and raw and bloody noise.

Critics have, at different times, compared Supersilent to the Miles Davis band of the early 1970s, to Stockhausen and to the fiercely nihilistic German rock of Can and Einstürzende Neubauten.

Much Supersilent material sounds structured, but is in fact 100% improvised.  The most recent release for Supersilent was 7, a live DVD filmed and directed by Kim Hiorthøy.

Susanna & The Magical Orchestra:

Susanna Karolina Wallumrød (pronounced Vallum-rur): vocals Morten Qvenild (pronounced Kven-il): piano, cembalo, autoharp, vibraphone, church organ, and keyboards

Both 2004’s debut List Of Lights And Buoys and this years collection of covers, Melody Mountain have brought great acclaim for Susanna & The Magical Orchestra.  Their recent UK tour demonstrated that this duo can bring their magic to the concert hall too.

Susanna & The Magical Orchestra have played London three times before - every show has sold out!

SUSANNA & THE MAGICAL ORCHESTRA UK Tour: 3rd - 9th  October

SOUND Presents
SOUND TRANSMITTER:
SUSANNA & THE MAGICAL ORCHESTRA  / TYS TYS
UK Tour - 3rd - 9th  October

Sound Transmitter
The first in a series of double bills featuring the most exciting musicians from the outer reaches of jazz and new music. A Nordic double bill featuring two magical singers who capture the elusive beauty of the north.

Susanna and The Magical Orchestra
Susanna Wallumrød – voice; Morten Qvenild – Fender Rhodes & electronics

Susanna and The Magical Orchestra’s debut album was one of the most celebrated of 2004, with the release of Melody Mountain this autumn, their ascendancy continues. The Norwegian duo’s slow moving, delicately woven web of voice and sparse electronics, entwines listeners in a world of exquisite beauty and pain. Susanna’s subtle vocal inflections and savoured consonants are suspended by the otherworldly glitches and organ sounds of the Magical Orchestra, AKA Morten Qvenild.

Tys Tys
Maria Laurette Friis - vocals, Ms-10, guitar; Henrik Sundh - Fender Rhodes & keyboards; Gunnar Halle - trumpet;

Fast emerging from Copenhagen’s eclectic underground scene where jazz, rock and electronic musicians mix freely, Tys Tys have found a powerful and distinctive sound through which to channel the lyrics of their surreal yet tender songs.  Improbable influences of late Beatles, jazz and even psalms appear fleetingly then vanish. Carried by Maria Laurette Friis’ fragile yet commanding voice and a tight-knit band, their original material transfers into captivating live performances.

SCANNER news

October 2006

Hello

Thunder, lightning and flooding across the city of London, bring the summer officially to a close and an excuse to run to warmer climates. It has an almost apocalyptic edge as darkness devours the daylight and the rain washes away at everything in sight.

September began with adventures in The Netherlands, collaborating with motion graphics artists D-Fuse on our Light Turned Down project, performed as part of their Transmit exhibition at MU gallery. A show at the impressive Effenaar venue, and a subsequent outdoor performance in Arnhem, were most enjoyable, especially watching ingenious audience members bring their own sofa to a live performance and setting it up in front of the stage! Further shows across Europe will emerge to align with the launch of the book A/V Audiovisual Art + VJ Culture by D-Fuse, published by Laurence King.

Cham's Soul choreographed by Anh Ngoc Nguyen premiered at the Place Theatre London to critical acclaim, and Night Email was broadcast on BBC Radio Scotland, featuring actor Bill Paterson reading a specially commissioned poem by Robert Crawford on the wonders of the internet and how it has transformed the lives of people living in Scotland. It was an expansion upon the original 1936 Night Mail film with WH Auden and Benjamin Briten, though my work could hardly compare to such fine figures. You might still be able to find this archived on the BBC Scotland website.

American artist Stephen Vitiello was recently in London and we had a good conversation which you can follow online at www.kultureflash.net Whilst a more detailed exploratory conversation about art and collaboration between us can be found in the forthcoming ‘8 Artists Try Not to Talk About Art’ published by Space Studios in London. This pocket-sized book is the conclusion of an intensive professional development and mentoring scheme at Space in London. Copies should be available soon at www.posteverything.com.

Three days in Philadelphia were pleasantly spent in the company of English composer Gavin Bryars, where we shared duties delivering talks to Temple University, and began our research towards projects to be realised in 2007. A man with a schedule as absurd of mine it was a delight to find another committed worker. I will be returning for performances and an installation at the Wagner Free Institute of Science which was established in the mid-nineteenth century to provide free science education for local people and amazingly continues its mission to this day. Incredibly too, it’s like stepping into a time machine with a collection arranged in Darwinian order, fossils, insects and animal and human skeletons taking their place in line.

Climbing mountains in North Wales has continued this month to prepare for the beta test of Night Flight www.night-flight.co.uk in October, in preparation for the big shows in 2007. It’s an adrenaline fuelled experience in the hills and over the borders in the darkness of night on the ridge of the Clywdian hills, where I’m designing the sound for this unusual location. Four hours of sound, fire, sculptures, performers and the occasional light, an experience not to be forgotten quickly.

For a moments break, I was fortunate to experience two extraordinary exhibitions recently. For any visitors or interested minds, I’d recommend checking out Jem Finer’s permanent installation, ‘A Score for a Hole in the Ground,’ a ten metre high steel structure up a steep incline in King’s Wood, Challock, near Ashford in Kent. It’s installed over a seven metre deep well and acts as an acoustic chamber for rainfall. If in London then visit Whitechapel Gallery to see the work of Hans Bellmer, the first major show of his work in this country since his death in 1975. It’s an extremely rare opportunity to view his sculptures, photographs, notebooks, sketches in this outpouring of obsessively detailed work that imagines strangely sexual depictions of the human body, with the craftsmanship of a master.

This week I’m escaping the storms and dashing back to Aix-en-Provence to install ‘Colour Planes,’ my show opening at 3 BIS F there, as part of Arborescence and performing alongside Schneider TM in Marseille. Then it’s directly to Rotterdam and a week of rock and roll studio engagements with Githead to finish writing and recording our second full-length album. By-passing Athens, Denmark and places it’s closing the month with a Parallax Beat Brothers tour. Onward and upward…

See you in November!
Best wishes

Robin Rimbaud

Colour Planes
3 BIS F (Lieu d'arts contemporains)
Aix-en-Provence
07-14 October 2006

This project explores an idea of landscape and the resonance and meaning of your surroundings. Using the Provence countryside as its inspirational focal point, the images and sound have been distilled
into an imaginary narrative, woven into a work that breaks down the visual field into planes of colour and texture. This contemplative work charts a contemporary reading of Cezanne and his visionary eye.

Night Haunts
By Sukhdev Sandhu
Design Mind Unit
Sound Design Scanner
04 February 2006 – on-going

Artangel Interaction invited writer and historian Sukhdev Sandhu to write a nocturnal journal unfolding over the course of 2006. His postings will appear sequentially at this microsite specially designed by Mind Unit. Sandhu's forays see him prospecting in the London night with the people who drive its pulse, from the avian police to security guards, zookeepers and exorcists. Acclaimed artist and musician Scanner has collaborated with Sukhdev and Ian Budden of Mind Unit to compose the sound for the site. If you would like to be kept informed as each episode is posted, join artangel‘s mailing list by clicking here.

NightJam
Bittersweet Songs for the Sleepless City
Artangel Interaction
20 July 2006. - on-going

NightJam is the latest project in Artangel Interaction’s Nights of London series of artist-led collaborations with people who have a special view on a hidden side of the nocturnal city. Scanner invited young people at New Horizon Youth Centre in King’s Cross to collaborate on a creative project that expresses how the city at night looks and sounds to their ears and eyes. Through music and voice workshops they explored the sense of freedom and fear, celebration and solitude of the concealing darkness. Meanwhile, they captured their nights on disposable cameras, taking images that are at times eerie, startling, contemplative and funny. NightJam presents two elusive visual and musical journeys through the city’s ‘quiet’ hours.

NightJam resents two music tracks, a film, photographs, that can be experienced and freely downloaded. A limited edition CD is also being distributed for free through the website. A series of remixes by other artists will be available over the forthcoming months.
