MURCOF news

Murcof, aka Fernando Corona, recently finished work on the soundtrack for a Spanish/Mexican movie called 'Las Vidas de Celia' ('Celia's Lives'), directed by Spanish director Antonio Chavarras and produced by Oberon (Spain) and Altavista Films (Mexico). The film will be released this autumn.

Murcof will be playing at the Montreux Jazz Festival in July with a live collaboration with French trumpet player Erik Truffaz.

Fernando is also working with classical pianist Francesco Tristano. The two are planning live shows together, and Fernando is helping with production and mastering duties on his new album.

Lastly, Fernando will be performing in China in May as part of a Mexican arts showcase at the Meet In Beijing Festival. More details when we have them.

You can find all Fernando's upcoming live dates here

HIGHPOINT LOWLIFE news update April 2006

Highpoint Lowlife newsletter / Mid-April 2006
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Hello!

Just a quick mid-month update as we some have late news, a few nice downloads and a couple of shows for you this week!

First up, a quick update to the website, where we now have an RSS feed, like we've been promising for months! You can subscribe at: http://highpointlowlife.com/feed.rss

For those of you new to RSS, an RSS feed is a simple text syndication method. With it, you can either take the feed and put it on another website, or you can use a personal RSS reader, which acts and looks quite similar to an email program. Most news sites all have RSS feeds now, and with a reader program, you can subscribe to your favorite sites, so that instead of remembering to go read your favorite sites, you can now see in one place which new content or news has been added. For more info, have a look at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RSS_(protocol)

Okay, enough wit the geek stuff...

Matthew Rozeik - Oh Lord Please Give Me Another Brain Reinterpreted
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

A free new download only album has just been uploaded over the weekend. The track "Oh Lord Please Give Me Another Brain" originally appeared on a compilation web release from Cactus Island in 2004 called "Stop, Look, Wave", and has now be remixed by AJ Cookson, d_rradio, Bauri, Nadir, Maps And Diagrams, DBMG-RAF, Ylid, Yellow6, Richie Phoe The Boatswain and Tom Mansi. Download it at: http://highpointlowlife.com/webrelease.php?id=20

Mandelbrot Set live on Thursday 20th April, Buffalo Bar
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

The Mandelbrot Set are a late addition to the next BigBigLove monthly session at the Buffalo Bar. Expect a night of indie-rock, shoegaze, noise and crazy electronics. They will be joining 28 Costumes and Butterfly Explosion. For full lineup and playlists, check out: http://www.myspace.com/bigbiglovefanzine

We just put together a bit of a press blurb for the Mandelbrot Set..

"The Mandelbrot Set are a Loud band. They like their drones and their converse-gazing, they like to use sample pedals and to change instruments during sets, but mainly they like to be Loud, and they like to do it differently.

Formed by Keung, from the ashes of his previous band, Hentai ("It's a relief to know that not all angsty teenagers listen to Radiohead and spend the rest of their adolescence trying to emulate Muse. Some of them stick Boards Of Canada stickers on their guitars, acquire DD-5 sample pedals and violin bows, and proceed to work the Mogwai-esque quiet - loud - louder - FUCKING APOCALYPTIC dynamic till their ears bleed. So thank fuck for Hentai" Drowned In Sound ), The Mandelbrot Set take their love of all things Constellation,their penchant for electronics, effects pedals and live sampling, their Shellac-esque rhythmic aggression, and combine it all into a wall of noise, melody and epic structure that would make Kevin Shields weep with envy.

Joined by Simon on drums (formerly of a ska/punk/reggae band called Supertrix), and multi-instrumentalist Melisa (onetime percussionist for London Schools Symphony Orchestra, and currently working on her Music BA in Norwich), the disparate influences and creative energies of the three combine to create a inspired pallette of sound and texture, a dense cloud of harmonic resonance, yet timed with enough space and clarity for all the individual elements to shine through."

Friday night Small Pieces Radio show with Matthew Rozeik Live
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Midnight on Friday sees us back at the helm of Resonance FM, overseeing the weekly Small Pieces radio show. This week in the studio we have a live set from Matthew Rozeik (which should hopefully include a little turntablism!), alongside the usual drunken banter from Thorsten, Keung and Mat.

Nvelope at The Eagle
++++++++++++++++

Saturday night sees Thorsten Sideb0ard play a DJ set at Nvelope at The Eagle, which is just off OId Street. He will be playing alongside Simon Manilla (Lo Recordings), DJ Stayhome (Law + Auder), and Wilf303 (Nvelope).

Other bits...
++++++++++++++++++

We have a load of other shows coming up between now and the end of the month, including randomNumber with Quack Quack in Leeds, Bovaflux with Kosmik Kommando and B12 in Birmingham, Izu at Club 69 in Paisely, Rose and Sandy (Marcia Blaine) playing Triptych in Glasgow with Andrea Parker, Matthew Rozeik at The Water Rats, and a very special Mandelbrot Set show at a secret London warehouse location. If any of them tickle yer fancy, head on over to the website for more info and links...

many thanks!

Githead / Aurelie on IDEAL [BBC 3]

IDEAL

IDEAL

Githead's They Are & Aurelie's Mariposa features in episode 5, from series 2, of BBC 3's Flagship comedy series IDEAL. The dark comedy about a luckless drug dealer played by Johnny Vegas is written by Graham Duff (also currently famed for Radio 4's Nebulous) a long time music fan who in a previous existence was the "late night cool tunes dude" on Brighton's now defunct Surf FM.

The episode can be viewed (along side the rest of the series, including the yet to be screened episode 6) from the BBC 3 website. Previous episodes have featured Lobe & Wire It is compulsive viewing and is highly recommended.

BLURT live date in London

Blurt will be playing a one off London show as part of their European tour.

Thursday 13th April - 7pm – 2am
Rhythm Factory
16-18 Whitechapel Road
London
E1 (Aldgate East tube)
020 7375 3774
£6/£4

The Body That They Build To Fit The Car, The Best Of Blurt Volume 2 is set for release anytime now. The tracklisting is as follows:
Smoke Time
Nights Before
Aboule Ton Fric
The Body That They Built To Fit The Car
Too Bombed Too Soon
Shoot And Shout
Forget About For Whom The Last Bell Tolls
The A2 Through Thong
What’s Happening To You, Milton?
Phone Monika
Brigth Red White And Blue
Machina Machina
Amour De Ma Vie
On The Stage
Eat Up Your House
Kazimir’s Tractor

“Blurt are to white funk and white noise what Towering Inferno was to beekeeping. Ted Milton says he’s not averse to wads of money. He says he used too shout his lyrics for fear of being mistaken for a singer. And he makes very odd, very interesting records. Why not treat yourself to one right now?” NME

“Emerging in post-punk, Blurt released songs that involved saxophones, the most minimal percussion imaginable and inspired titles such as My Mother Was A Friend of an Enemy of the People. Milton, one of pop’s greatest living eccentrics, may well have been listening to Captain Beefheart and Charlie Parker – but it’s equally possible that he had never heard any music at all” The Guardian

“It’s so rare to see anything so single minded and achieved on stage, you have to remain watching. When the list is made of the authentic inheritors of Kurt Schwitters's line of subversive nonsense – orators who question the power relations of rhetoric, and unleash weevils of humour and independent thought into the grain bags of wealth and power – Ted Milton will require a special place.” The Wire

“Blurt are one of the most unclassifiable yet charming acts of the post-punk era.” Time Out

HIGHPOINT LOWLIFE news April 2006

Hello!

Ouch, I hurt so much! Word of advice if you start or run a label... Don't move house very often! Carrying all them boxes of CDs and vinyl is back-breaking! Nicely settled into a new Hackney mansion though, and all unpacked in a rather more spacious environment.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Looking ahead through April, we have another great month, with a load of live gigs, releases and free downloads for you...

Our two latest releases, Fisk Industries 10" EP 77 And Rising and Izu's Going Salamander should be hitting stores this week or next. '77 And Rising' is also now available via all good download stores, with Izu following in the next few weeks.

Couple of new reviews have come in:

Fisk Industries / 77 And Rising
"Crunchy breaks power the opener 'Reflection' with writhing groans imbuing the song's glimmering core with brooding ambiance while the shuffling chug in the closer 'Polska' takes the funk vibe to an even sweeter level. Other tracks exude a similar beat punch: the dark electro of throbbing beats and piercing stabs of string samples in 'Close' aligns Fisk Industries to its Spezial Materials brethren, and jittery breaks and thudding bass lines enhance the wide-screen character of 'Liquid Silver Moments.' At the EP's core, the fleeting 'Moieties (Part One)' introduces a somber symphonic dimension that the second part's sparkling keys sheds some sunlight upon. 77 And Rising: tripped-out, cybernetic excellence from Mr. Ranson that's over far too quickly." Textura.org

You can download an exclusive track from the 77 And Rising EP over at http://textura.org

It was also Mat/Fisk Industries birthday this past saturday, April 1st! You can pass him well-wishes, birthday bumps, friend requests or all of the above over at his site fisk-industries.co.uk or his myspace at http://www.myspace.com/fiskindustries

Izu / Going Salamander
"Scythian blades stab mercilessly over a slamming base in the brutal opener 'Litterball,' and it's hard not to jaw-drop when the squelchy squalor of 'Polish Trouble' detonates (run for cover, too, when its chipmunk MC starts raging); got to love, too, the filthy beat crunch and light-speed voice cut-ups in 'I Gotcha.' Rude doesn't necessarily mean crude, however, as there's more than enough finesse beneath the skuzzy surface (the sweet melody cruising over the barbed-wire breaks in 'Jumpers' for instance). Going Salamander's more Kid 606 than Alva Noto but no one said electronic music need only be tasteful and austere. Izu brings a laudable manic intensity to a genre that's often too
polite for its own good." Textura.org

"I heard a CD the other week by Izu. 'Going Salamander' blew my mind, that doesn't happen very often. This week its released for you all to drool over and its a huge recommendation from me (and the rest of us here!! Phil x). 11 tracks in total and every one a winner. Distorted clanking industrial metallic techno at its finest. Pure machine music, dark at times, melodic and quirky at others. Crunchy breaks combine with off kilter futuristic sounds to create an electroid beast of mammoth proportions. This is one of those great albums that manages to be both experimental and accessible. If your into stuff like early Art Of Noise (Beatbox), early Aphex Twin (Ventolin), Hymen Records etc then get on it. I can't tell you how good this is. On Highpoint Lowlife. Wicked." Norman Records, Leeds.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Up on the website we have two new free web releases for download: One is a digital single from Izu to accompany the album's release. The track listing is:

1. Polish Trouble (album version)
2. O Ye Of Little Faith (exclusive)
3. North Star (Konx-Om-Pax mix)
4. Jumpers (Village Orchestra's anti-rave pop party mix)

The second of the web releases is a recording from Marshall Watson's recent excellent London debut at our last Not Clickable event.

Get them both from the front page at http://highpointlowlife.com or from the download section.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

On the live front this month, you can catch randomNumber playing in Leeds with Quack Quack on the 19th; Bovaflux in Birmingham with Kosmic Kommando and B12 on the 21st; I'll be be DJing at Nvelope in London on the 22nd; Very special Triptych show in Glasgow with Rose And Sandy (Marcia Blaine School For Girls off-shoot project) supporting Andrea Parker and many more on the 28th April; 'nother Glasgow show the following evening (well, Paisley actually) for Izu who will be playing out alongside Automat at Club69 on the 29th; That same evening in London, the 29th, [no-signal] are puttingon a show that sees our most lovely post-rockers, The Mandelbrot Set playing with Picasstro and Sanso-Xtro. You'll find complete listings for these shows and links to more info over on our website...

Like A Stuntman also have a record release show in Hamburg on the 29th to celebrate their re-release of Fresh Air Is Not The Worst Thing In Town for Germany/Austria/Switzerland on the wonderful Records&Me imprint (http://www.recordsandme.de/) We're working with Records&Me on a joint Like A Stuntman 10"/CDEP for release in late May, and Like A Stuntman will be back gracing the UK shores with a June tour which is coming together rather well, with shows with Glasgow's St. Deluxe, Fuck-off Machete and The Beatnik Filmstars. Full details for the tour next month...

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

A quick recap of the upcoming releases...

Like A Stuntman - "Stan Places" 10" mini-album/CDEP
Mandelbrot Set - "All Our Actions Are Constantly Repeated" CD
Marshall Watson - "Math And Other Word Problems" CD
The Marcia Blaine School For Girls" - title-tbc CD
Tigrics - "Synk" CD
v/a - The Beautiful Tactile Objects Series Volume 1
(7 x 7" boxset w/ Tarentel, Leafcutter John, Mandelbrot Set, Die Munch Machine, n.Ln, Bugs Eat Books, Colophon)

Theres a couple of new artists who we've been speaking with and who we will be announcing projects from shortly. One of the first we can announce will be London based Matthew Rozeik, whose wonderful split EP with Ylid, Van111, is out now on Static Caravan. We'll be working with Matthew on a full length scheduled for early next year (you can catch Matthew playing in London on the 28th of April with October All Over, The Strange Death Of Liberal England,
and Akira). To coincide with the announcement, we'll be hosting a remix album for Matthew that he has commisioned from friends and collaborators.

"Oh Lord, Please Give Me Another Brain - Reinterpretations" will feature reinterpretations by Ylid, Bauri, Nadir, Richie Phoe, Maps and Diagrams, d_rradio, Yellow 6, die Baader-Meinhof Gruppe, The Boatswain and AJ Cookson. We'll be hosting that up on the site within the next week, so keep checking over to the main highpointlowlife.com site...

OK, thanks and 'ave a lovely month!
Cheers,
thorsten

SCANNER news

April 2006

Hello

As the sounds of Finnish pop music resounds around me it’s a chance for me to catch up on the last month and pause for a moment in the sub zero temperatures of Helsinki where I’m premiering work at the amusingly titled Pixelache Festival, alongside works and performances by AGF, Sue Costabile and Vladislav Delay.

March began with a very entertaining show with Alvin Curran and DJ Olive over in Milano where we played a set that swept across numerous genres of music in less than two hours, from easy cheesy listening, to warm mellow house beats, via new contemporary and glitchy pop. Who says we don’t know how to keep the kids happy?

Work has continued on sound-designing Reverb, this new British horror movie, which will open at cinemas at the end of this year. I often wonder what my neighbours must think once they’ve heard endless repeats of women screaming "HELP ME!" and crying loudly from my studio as I try to formulate the best shape for each scene. These adventures and murderous activities will continue across the summer months.

For any European residents, iTunes is now featuring a generous 24 (yes, count them!) albums so far of Scanner back catalogue, including the long deleted recordings Scanner 1 (1992), Mass Observation (sampled by Bjork for Possibly Maybe), Accretions (live Dutch radio recording), Cystic (the 20>2000 release on Raster Noton), Free Chocolate Love (easy listening music with David Shea), Stopstarting (ISEA/Liverpool School of Art exclusive CD), as well as countless other releases otherwise unavailable. iTunes in Australia, Japan and Canada will take a little longer to begin featuring these as it’s a paperwork related administration battle! There’s never been a better time to explore my perversely exploratory past!

There’s been an extremely positive response to the Night Haunts project (nighthaunts.org.uk) so hope you can continue to tune in to new adventures as it moves on over the year. We’ve explored the police that secure the streets from the sky, the cleaners that abolish traces of our everyday and forthcoming is a story of loneliness and the atlas of suffering it entails. The city is constantly revealing a new layer of skin in each episode.

Anyone resident or passing close to Paris might be interested in MOBILE, a show I’ve assisted in curating, which will feature a special music related video programme, organized by FRAC, with the chance to view videos in a unique lounge style area by choice, designed by Fabrice Gygi in a 'Videotheque Mobile', almost like a little mobile library. I've chosen some key figures working with video images and music, including Scott Pagano, Semiconductor, Judith Goddard, D-Fuse and HFR-Lab. The programme will also feature works by video artists Pipilotti Rist and Anri Sala, Simon Fisher Turner will be performing his live soundtrack to Derek Jarman’s seminal film Blue. It opens 26 Apri at Espace Landowski/Boulogne-Billancourt.

I have new work released this month as part of the Kink FM and Steamin’ Soundworks ‘X-Rated: The DARK Files’ CD release. We last worked together on the wedding soundtrack The Radiance Of A Thousand Suns Burst Forth At Once (2005) but it’s not as pornographic as the title might suggest though, don’t worry, or don’t be too disappointed! Following the death of Jhonn Balance of Coil, it’s offer a gentle tribute in thought and sound, featuring new and rare tracks from Coil, Nurse with Wound, Markant, Monoton, Peter Christopherson and others. Don’t forget to wear heavy eyeliner and listen with the curtains closed

April also brings some curious recording and research towards other projects – the strangest possibly being re-designing a car horn for the USA. Let’s see how many times I can make jokes about being horny in the coming weeks!

On that erotic note I bid farewell.

Best wishes

Robin Rimbaud

Featuring work by Scott Arford, Jim Campbell, D-Fuse with Scanner, Granular Synthesis, Gary Hill, Atau Tanaka, Stephen Vitiello, Nam June Paik and others.
 What Sound Does a Color Make? is a travelling exhibition (2005-2007) organised & circulated by iCi, curated by Kathleen Forde.

Night Haunts
by Sukhdev Sandhu
Design: Mind Unit
Sound Design: Scanner
04 February 2006 – 04 February 2007
Artangel Interaction invited writer and historian Sukhdev Sandhu to write a nocturnal journal unfolding over the course of 2006. His postings will appear sequentially at this microsite specially designed by Mind Unit. Sandhu's forays see him prospecting in the London night with the people who drive its pulse, from the avian police to security guards, zookeepers and exorcists. Acclaimed artist and musician Scanner has collaborated with Sukhdev and Ian Budden of Mind Unit to compose the sound for the site.
