Yoshio Maeda first came to swim in 1996 when he was still a 21 year old student in Tokyo. With his friend Tomoki Tsukamoto he started the fledgling "Metro-Juice" label. Tomoki did minimal techno, Yoshi did breakbeats. During a holiday trip to London they were persuade to DJ at the opening party for the Art show at the Irish Museum of Modern Art in which Immersion were taking part. Over the following months back in Tokyo Yoshi refined his art from it's lo-fi beginnings and delivered his album in '97. Here is what DJ had to say about it "UFO, Takemura & Monday Mishiru are just a few examples of how the Japanese - ruthelessly regimented pioneers of electronics & management efficiency though they are - also have a natural communion with the earthier arts of Jazz and the syncopated beat. Enter 22 year old Yoshio Maeda aka dol-lop, the latest Tokyo brother to hybridise jazz and computers. Incorporating along the way phat, experimental breaks, dub, techno, ambient & eastern classical music. Think the bastard off spring of Derrick May, DJ Shadow and Vadim. Soulful, funky, sometimes utterly meszmerising." All given in a 10/10 review! Others followed on with similarly glowing praise, including most notably "Hip Hop Connection" who rated it one of the albums of the year.

"Cryptic Audio" proved to be an early "meister-work" as post student life in Japan rudely interrupted with career demands however since 2000 Yoshi has been active again on the Tokyo music scene. Catch up with him at www.sound-channel.com
