Back in the real world, where we live from day to day, we're working over the argument about whether music should be free. Being an independent site, carrying independent record labels by small artists the conclusion is: we'd love it if we could give away our work, but the world don't work like that and we still need to make a living.
So we thought we'd make it a bit harder for all those big companies by making it a bit easier to pay the artists and labels back for the work you appreciate in a more direct way, and provide some information and bring some people back into the world of sales.
I loved my old record shop. It wasn't a shopping thing, it was a social thing. I went into the shop, knew the guys behind the counter and the other customers, and we'd chat about records and what was going on. Moving to London I lost this feeling of community.
A couple of my friends, Tony and Colin, approached me about setting up a mail order site to help small labels: the ones whose records aren't stacked en mass at the front of HMV Records. Their labels were to act as a starting point, and the idea was to do what the internet was good at: allowing people with a specific, shared interest, and relate that back to other people, and to help develop that interest.
It's not about any particular style of music, or any particular artists. We're neither seeking out the latest hype or avoiding it. We know there is a passion out there for music and we want tyo help people find it and connect with it.
There is music here you can listen to on our streaming radio - choose radio in the navigation at the top of the screen and you will get to a page showing a list of the current 50 most popular tracks on our site. There is also a link to the random radio, as there is on the home page - Tip log in to hear full tracks!
You'll need the latest flash player which you can find here, or you can choose to stream individiual tracks where available. Some of these tracks have buy next to them which means they are available as 320Kbps DRM free MP3 (which means it's super high quality and you haven't lost everything if your computer or MP3 player blows up!)
Of course we also sell (as we've always done) CDs [those little shiny plastic discs that people make MP3s out of] and vinyl [those larger black plastic discs which a huge amount of music lovers out there like] as well as t-shirts, DVDs and badges as our labels and artists require
Another reason for PostEverything [or PE as we affectionately call it] is that we can reach a wider audience for our labels. We know that a lot of our records are hard to find, because we have too little stock or too small an audience, to get top quality distribution [no offence to our distributors, they have to eat too].
And because we work with a range of labels finding something on one label should lead you to us, and then on to more music from a wide range or artists.
So, take a trip with us away from the mainstream. Come on in and meet the family. And check back for new releases and labels.
Dorian Moore & Colin Newman
PostEverything was set up as a limited company to protect the interests of partners and our customers. It is four people:
Colin Newman - Managing Director
Colin has been involved in underground music for longer than even he cares to remember! His membership of highly influential cult arty pre/post rockers Wire (whose new millennium pinkflag imprint is distributed by PostEverything) has ensured a certain notoriety. Colin has also made several solo records for labels as diverse as Beggars Banquet, 4AD, Crammed and swim ~ the label, available on PostEverything, he founded in 1993 with his wife Malka Spigel as well as being involved with various other projects including '80s proto-hop outfit Oracle and a/v digital evolutionaries immersion. He sees PostEverything as the logical future for the independant distribution movement begun in the 80s.
Dorian Moore - Technical Director
A rare breed of Techie, Dorian understands the interoprability of what computers can do along with how people use them, why, and has huge ideals about how computers should work for people. He has single handedly built the entire PostEverything website, and has a history of involvement in web development for record labels such as Ninja Tune, Warp Records, Creation Records, Mind Horizon, Pressure Sounds, Hydrogen Dukebox whilst Managing Director of Kleber Design. He left Kleber after becoming disenchanted with dealing with major record labels and to follow other interests, amongst which was PostEverything. He's currently also working as Chief Technical Officer at SHOWstudio and working with Japanese Label Management company Hostess developing Digital Convenience, as well as doing various bits of consultancy.
Des Berry
Des came to PostEverything via The Leaf Label but has long been a part of the London music business scene, previously working as a writer for Breakin' Point magazine, DJing around the capital and serving time at various record labels including Dorado / Filter, Missile and Pulse-8. He now keeps PostEverything running on a day to day basis... making sure your orders are processed, your questions are answered, new stock is sourced & available and keeping the website up to date. He's very good at it.
